PRIMARY GERMAN KS3 GERMAN BEGINNER GERMAN TELLING THE TIME ANALOGUE O’CLOCK LIST WITH MATCHING CLOCK FACES I like to give visual vocabulary lists to my young beginner learners of German, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to***link it in their memory with a visual image***, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell the time. Children glue the lists into their German vocabulary books, or file them in their German vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful German vocabulary reference bank for both class and home learning. For young and / or beginner German learners, I focus initially on a single time set, and this list shows o’clock on a single page. This is because in my experience students benefit from a very clear outline of new language and vocabulary, avoiding lots of text on a single page - even my older students who are completely new to German prefer this. When I’m sure that students are confident with o’clock, I then move on to additional time sets. PRIMARY FRENCH KS3 FRENCH YEAR 7 FRENCH CHRISTMAS WORDS & PICTURES A great French Christmas picture & vocabulary reference resource for younger learners of French. It works well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class. There are 20 common French Christmas words with pictures that I’ve found ideal for children learning French. I’ve used a blend of masculine and feminine nouns, definite article and indefinite article and there are some plurals too. GCSE FRENCH CONJUGATION PRACTICE SAMPLER I’ve created a lot of quick conjugation workbooks for my students and they’re really popular and effective. They’re a great way of practising, reinforcing and revising how to conjugate all the various verb groups and tenses in French. I use them in a range of learning contexts such as independent work either in class time or at home, holiday refresher work, or individual activities for cover lessons. Students really benefit from several opportunities to work through the workbook, once or twice a term across a whole school year is a great way of both mapping progress and developing overall understanding and competence. The workbooks focus on specific sets of 25 high-frequency verbs in a range of tenses. They include modals, regular, irregular & mixed and reflexive verbs. Each workbook is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: French : English and English : French Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in French, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation. ESL EFL ENGLISH VERBS LIST reference resource for students focusing on high-frequency English verbs. This list is a collection of 100 high-frequency and common English verbs that students generally need in the advanced beginning to intermediate stages of their English Language learning programmes. It includes regular and irregular verbs, with some modals. They are all in the infinitive form - it’s an important step in learning is to ensure that students quickly develop a useful vocabulary bank, are able to recognize English verbs, and are confident with the meaning of those verbs - at that point we can move swiftly on to looking at conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context. Students shouldn’t take on the task of learning the verbs all at once though - this is more of a longer-term reference resource that students can use to audit their developing English verb vocabulary. PRIMARY FRENCH KS3 FRENCH ANIMALS FLASHCARDS POSTERS These French animals display posters / flashcards create a fabulous French look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of French. They introduce learners to a range of animals in French from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. Students definitely notice the different words for a/an, and ask why some animals are un, and others are une. I’ve used this as a useful prompt to introduce the concept of gender. There are 20 animals using the masculine and feminine indefinite article, which is a great opportunity to begin to compare French to English. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as ours and loup. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from their first language, helps learners become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts in both languages, which I’ve found to be really useful for both current and later learning. The animals are: a bear : a bee : a bird : a butterfly : a cat : a dog : a fish : a fox : a frog : a horse : a kangaroo : a monkey : a mouse : an owl : a parrot : a rabbit : a spider : a squirrel : a turtle / a tortoise : a wolf It doesn’t matter if some of the animals don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the posters / flashcards provide learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word in French, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in French. They also help learners begin to work out the meaning of new and unknown words from visual clues or prompts. Use them as flashcards to introduce and practise language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. GCSE GERMAN DOMINOES GAMES High-frequency German verbs dominoes games: 3 games and challenges are a lively alternative to more traditional grammar & vocabulary ‘drilling’ activities. They will help students build up and embed their vocabulary and knowledge of high-frequency German verbs in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. There are 99 common German verbs in the infinitive form, along with the corresponding English verbs. Students can work happily challenging themselves and each other to create a perfect domino bilingual verb sequence, on the classroom floor, or on a long(ish) table, by matching the German and English verbs. They love the competitive element of the whole-group quizzes, though the pdf version works really well too for small groups - and if you’re homeschooling. I HAVE, WHO HAS? is a lively & communicative whole-group language learning game. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompt of the clock faces, makes it perfect for practising, reinforcing & refreshing how to tell the time in GERMAN. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too. Half past the hour can be really tricky for beginner German learners, and these kinds of games really help to embed it. The aim of the game is to arrange the clocks in the correct order, starting with the first card, Es ist ein Uhr/Es ist acht Uhr, and ending with the last card Es ist viertel vor zwölf / Es ist viertel nach zwölf. Students can either create a human chain timeline, holding the cards themselves, or a card timeline, on the floor, a longish table or other flat surface. I think students appreciate the chance to try something new in lessons during the run-up to Christmas, and I always have several sets of vocab cards that they can revisit language we learnt earlier in the year - it really is the perfect time to practice and consolidate knowledge. The Christmas theme gets them feeling pretty festive, and they’re more than happy to work independently together, selecting the areas of vocab they feel they’d like to focus on. There are lots of games they enjoy playing, and I’ve described several that are really popular. The quiz works well as a whole-group quiz, but I always give my students a pdf version that they can load on to tablets to play the quiz in small groups if they prefer to do it that way.
